Caloocan City Mayor Enrico “Recom”Echiverri yesterday reminded the participants of the Summer Program for the Employment of Students (SPES) to value the skills and experience they have learned while working for the city government.

According to Echiverri, who himself was a full-time working student before, even though the students spent barely a month rendering service to the public, they were able to learn and understand the basic functions of the different offices in government they were assigned to.Echiverri said many are called in public service but only a select would ever get the chance to become public servants and work for government.

The mayor added that he thinks highly of the SPES participants because they were able to sacrifice their summer vacation working rather than using up the entire period for holiday-seeking.
For his part, Labor Industrial Relations Office chief Dante Estaban said a total of 850 student workers under the Recom Employment Program ended their short but meaningful work yesterday which started last May 5.
Each student will earn a total of P5,950 for his or her less than a month service but will receive the payment on a staggered basis.

Sixty-percent of their total salary or P3,570 will be paid by the city government.

While the remaining 40 percent or P2,380 will be paid by the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) on the condition that they will be enrolled for this school year.

Meanwhile, Ma. Junnelen Jamaica Garcia, 17, said she and her friends had a pleasant stay with the office they were assigned to.

Garcia added that her first hand experience of working in the government was very memorable and educational.

She also thanked Mayor Echiverri for prioritizing the poor but deserving students of the city to benefit of the program.
